South Main Street Bridge Project Wins Prestigious Engineering Award

Mar 6, 2025 - Green/New Franklin, OH

Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker, P.E., P.S., is proud to announce that the South Main Street Bridge has been recognized with a distinguished design award by The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC.) This honor celebrates the outstanding collaboration between Compass Infrastructure Group LLC. and Kenmore Construction who delivered an innovative and accelerated solution to a critical infrastructure challenge.

The South Main Street Bridge, spanning Nimisila Creek in the City of Green, OH, was already a load-posted structure with weight restrictions in place to protect its structural integrity. Originally scheduled for reconstruction in Spring 2024, the bridge experienced unexpected deterioration, requiring an urgent response.

It is worth emphasizing that at no point were drivers/residents in danger, as the office’s team of skilled inspectors closely monitor load rated bridges throughout the county and promptly identified that the deterioration was occurring more rapidly than anticipated. Their expertise and proactive assessments ensured that necessary precautions were taken.

Compass Infrastructure Group LLC, as the lead designer, and Kenmore Construction as the builder worked closely with the Summit County Engineer, the City of Green, and other stakeholders to expedite design and construction. In a remarkable feat, the project team delivered complete construction plans 171 days ahead of schedule and completed the bridge just 106 days after its closure, an impressive 346 days before the contractual deadline.

To enhance durability and reduce bridge maintenance, the new structure incorporates modified shear keys with Ultra-High-Performance concrete grout, a cutting-edge technique informed by research from the University of Akron. This new approach will hopefully ensure greater longevity and resilience for the new structure.

“We’re honored to have one of our bridge construction projects selected for an award based upon the exceptional design by Compass and construction by Kenmore,” said Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker, P.E., P.S. “This project is proof of what can happen through proactive planning, teamwork, and dedication to serving our communities.”

The successful completion of the South Main Street Bridge project highlights engineering excellence and the strength of collaboration in tackling critical infrastructure challenges. We congratulate all stakeholders who contributed to this achievement. The Summit County Engineer’s Office remains dedicated to proactive infrastructure improvements that enhance public safety, minimize disruptions, and ensure the longevity of essential transportation assets.
