Local Representatives Meet with ODOT to Review Progress on the State Route 8 Bridge Project

Apr 3, 2025 - Akron Oh

Members of the Summit County Engineer’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and Summit County Council members Jeff Wilhite, Christine Higham, and Erin Dickinson met today to assess progress on ODOT’s State Route 8 Bridge Replacement Project. The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the project’s scope, construction milestones, and its impact on local infrastructure and transportation.

The State Route 8 bridge, which was built in 1953 and is owned and maintained by ODOT, is a critical corridor for Northeast Ohio, serving over 114,000 vehicles daily. The project, led by ODOT, aims to improve safety, longevity, and functionality.

While not under Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker, P.E., P.S., and his team’s jurisdiction, the State Route 8 bridge shares many similarities with the upcoming High-Level Bridge replacement project, managed by his office. The visit allowed stakeholders in these projects to gain insight into best practices, engineering strategies, and construction approaches that could inform future work on the High-Level Bridge.

“This was a valuable opportunity to see firsthand how ODOT is handling such a significant bridge replacement,” said Aaron Engelhart, Office Manager at the Summit County Engineer Office. “With our own High-Level Bridge replacement in the planning stages, collaboration and shared knowledge will help us create a smooth process for our project when the time comes.”

The visit reinforced the commitment of local agencies to maintaining and improving critical infrastructure for residents and businesses in Summit County. As the High-Level Bridge project moves forward, Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker, P.E., P.S. will continue to engage with stakeholders and leverage insights from similar projects to ensure a successful outcome.
